Well, that certainly didn't take long.
After taking my query to Facebook, my estimable comrade Bob Egan of PopSpots NYC named the spot and answered the question without so much as breaking a sweat, coyly suggesting:
Across the street from a famous rock hotel and next to the front gate of a famous park that ain't easy ro get into.
He meant The Gramercy Park Hotel, of course, which I discussed at some length back on this post. He then followed up with pictorial evidence...

I have to say, I was so goddamn convinced that the spot in question was actually further south on Fifth Avenue around 11th Street, but alas ... never argue with Bob Egan about these things.
A reader named John, meanwhile, helpfully weighed in about other specifics:
Seems to have been shot by noted English photographer Michael Brennan who was doing NYC assignments at the time.
