Another day, another antiquated student film.
This one dates back to 1984 and was put together by some SVA students. Here's the official story...
RAW CHUCK Is A Student Film shot in New York City for an assignment while attending The School of Visual Arts, 1984. Shot with an Arriflex 16mm silent camera and fixed lenses on a turret. The challenge was in post production where we were faced with the task of synchronizing the 'pre-recorded' audio tracks as well as sound effects with the action on the screen.
The premise is: What happens when a group of street thugs, winos and drug addicts are given the opportunity to fight over a piece of meat?
Using the resources at the time, we were able to befriend the underground group, Butthole Surfers, at a series of shows at Danceteria Club in Manhattan. They agreed to being photographed during a performance at 8BC [pictured above], an underground club located on 8th Street between avenues B & C. ( band formed by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary in San Antonio, Texas in 1981. The band has had numerous personnel changes, but its core lineup of Haynes, Leary, and drummer King Coffey has been consistent since 1983. Teresa Nervosa served as second drummer from 1983 to 1985, 1986 to 1989, and 2009. The band has also employed a variety of bass players, most notably Bill Jolly and Jeff Pinkus. source: Wikipedia )
The primary scene with the band, Butthole Surfers, illustrates the innate tenacity that two of three young characters have to battle it out for the prize- RAW CHUCK- that awaits them outside the club on a cart between two abandoned buildings. Unfortunately the two wind up getting slammed, stomped and moshed to death inside the club in a bloody demise.
Part One winds up with the remaining indigents fighting it out, one by one getting killed by means of lead pipes, clubs, chains and anything they can find laying around, including cement bricks. So sit tight and settle in, grab a brew and a bud or do whatever it is you need to do and enjoy a barrage of violent dog rapists, switch blade stabbing, necro-junkies, deranged psycho billy thrash hounds go to town on one another! You won't be disappointed.
This is THE ORIGINAL Hard Core, gritty, CBGB's slamming, street fighting, ultra underground film you have been waiting for. -Sean Hughes aka "Shazzer Productions" and "Raw Chuck" Student Camera Operator and Freedomofspeech You Tube Channel Creator
Sounds pretty promising, right?
Well, in all truth, it grainy and, at time, hard to discern what's happening. The sound is shoddy and it's pretty dated, but whaddya want? It's a student film!
If possible, ... enjoy "Raw Chuck" For more obscure student-film fun, be sure to check out yesterday's post.
