The last time I posted about Rebel Rebel at 319 Bleecker Street was in 2022, which even then seemed pretty late in the day to be writing about a venture that shut its doors in 2016, but here we are again.
Rebel Rebel was forced to close its doors, back in 2016, due to spiraling rent. Specializing in rarefied British imports, Rebel Rebel was a truly amazing shop, and I shopped there for the literal entirety of its 28 year run.
When it closed, a Dutch fashion retail concern called Scotch & Soda, who operated out of the storefront to Rebel Rebel’s east, took over the space. Jeremiah Moss of Jeremiah's Vanishing New York wrote his own eulogy for Rebel Rebel. You might remember my own post about same.
By the tail end of 2023, Scotch & Soda also closed up shop. Here in 2024, I still have no idea what the shop's intrepid proprietor -- who my friend Rob and I referred to exclusively as "French Dave," despite him not actually being French -- went onto next. Here's hoping he landed on his feet. Here's a great shot of him by Evan Kafka, as poached from Jeremiah's piece.
Meanwhile, the space that had been Rebel Rebel now looks like this.
