Contrary to the title of this post, let me assure you, dear reader, that NO -- this entry is not about refuting the sickly allure of rampant nostalgia that otherwise drives this blog ....er... would it be forward or backward? It's not about re-discovering the present, but rather the re-appraising and rekindling of my love for a British indie band called The Wedding Present.
Comb back into the archives of this blog, and you'll see them mentioned several times, but not to much recently (the last time was probably this one). I first heard the Wedding Present in 1989, and their singular brand of no-nonsense, guitar-overdriving punky indie rock pretty much defined much of the ensuing decade for me (it was really between them and Cop Shoot Cop). In time, though, I kinda felt I'd heard all I needed from them, and stopped feverishly following their very prolific output by about 2005.
This is their new single below, and it kinda blew me right off the porch .... David Gedge discovers Nile Rodgers (with a bassline cribbed from "Change" by Killing Joke, itself swiped from "Me & Baby Brother" by War). Crank it.
