I’ve talked about the Killed By Desk podcast a few times here, already, but they recently hosted former Black Flag bassist turned film dialogue/ADR-editor Kira Roessler, and it’s another great episode, even though they don’t spend all that much time discussing Kira’s days in the band. The podcast isn't really about that.
One of the great disappoints of my life (well, that might be a bit of an overstatement) was my first and only time witnessing Black Flag at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio back in 1986 (as discussed here) and discovering that Kira had left the ranks of the band, fleetingly replaced by the since deceased C’el Revuletta. While Black Flag are largely more celebrated for their earlier period, Kira’s tenure leant whole new dynamics to the fractious band’s sound and aesthetic. She was also pretty much every hardcore kid’s crush, and played bass like a goddamn samurai.
Like I said, she speaks more about her career in film-audio production than her days in the infamous Black Flag van, but it’s still a compelling discussion. Check it out via the embed below.
And here was Kira in her Black Flag heyday...
