I used to love walking up the stairs from the 6 train on Astor and seeing that lightning bolt mural, it seemed to encapsulate all of the scrappy energy of the East Village in the late 80s and into the 90s. Would be interested to know who the artist was that designed it. I assumed that it was put up there some time in the early 80s but apparently it had been there way before that. There's an image that I've seen online from time to time that dates it anywhere from 1967 to 1972. Back then there was also a small luncheonette in the northwest corner of the lot where Astor and Lafayette intersect.
