Great column, Alex. I bought "Horses" way back in HS because my favorite band, The Feelies, covered "Dancing Barefoot." The record never really caught on with me and I ignored the rest of Patti Smith's catalogue. However, I learned that Smith played a central role in the early 70s NYC music scene after reading "Please Kill Me" by Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil so now I am intrigued more about Smith's life than her music.

Definitely go read "Just Kids," which will provide you a much greater insight into Patti and her life. It's a great read.

I also agree that it's a fantastic read, and her music/delivery can be a bit off, but her version of "G-L-O-R-I-A" on SNL was an iconic rock'n'roll moment (SNL keeps taking the original down, but this will do it):
