« Bad Brains in Central Park, `79 | Main | Who's Got Thirty Days: Revenge of the 30 Day Song Challenge »

October 04, 2019

This is what I dug up yesterday after reading your posts.

Sade was at a wedding reception at Danceteria in Sep 1982 where Pride performed. I could see her going behind the bar off-set to help out.

Jon Baker who booked her at his Axiom fashion show at The Underground (860 Broadway) in May 1981, also booked gigs for artists from London and Berlin at Danceteria. So her Danceteria connection was strong through him.

Baker and Sade go back to London Blitz Club days 1979-80. He moved to NYC 1980-84. She was a designer for him at Axiom in London. Pride stayed with Jon in Sep 1982. He and his circle took care of artist visits and visits by British fashion designers - who knows what that all entailed.

Bartending is the most popular second job for musicians to make ends meet. Sade definitely stayed in NYC many days in 1981 and in 1982 and extensively in 1983-84 off and on after being signed. Jon Baker was in NYC throughout (and returned later for Island and V2 Records).

I have seen the Sade pouring drinks citation a lot as well in reference to Danceteria. But not sure where it originally came from.

PS. My sources for prior facts were from blog posts by people who were directly with her in NYC. Firsthand accounts.
