At just like that -– after all that overthinking and hand-wringing -– it’s over.
Oliver’s four weeks at summer camp in Vermont came to a close, last weekend. While the long walkup to that four-week session was marked by trepidation -- mine, more than anyone else’s -– the experience essentially proved to be everything we’d been hoping for and more.
Being that we’d only fielded two, fleeting missives from the boy during his time away, we really didn’t have that tangible a notion as to how he was actually fairing beyond one reassuring report from a counselor and periodic (but uneven) cameos Oliver made in each weekly photo updates on the camp’s website. We didn’t quite know what to expect when showed back up this past Saturday.
Oliver came bounding out of his cabin looking lean and tanned, doubtlessly from running around in the sun for the past several weeks. The homesickness he grappled with during the first couple of days was quickly dispelled and he’d immersed himself in everything the camp had to offer. He made several new friends and toured us around the camp’s grounds with a confidence that bordered on swagger. Not only that, but he cannot wait to go back next year.
Mission very much accomplished.
