This particular scene has been on my mind in the past several days, but I neglected to post it, initially, lest I be possibly perceived as trivializing a very real situation. But when my friend Chung Wong posted a still from Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List,” it reinforced my notion to share this, as what is the purpose of true cinema — if not art in all its permutations — if not to to reflect and express the complexities and inequities of the human condition. Even ostensibly “silly" comic book movies.
Ignore, for the moment, that this is a scene from a superhero film about mutants, and simply watch this play out. Watch the horror as a family is forcibly separated at gun point. Watch the trauma in the faces of the parents and the boy. Soak that in. Yes, once again, it’s a superhero movie, but this is a historically accurate depiction (up until the end). This brand of inhumane brutality actually happened. You should be emotionally affected by it. And this very scenario is happening again …. only this time on American soil. It's being enforced by the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy.
The bittersweet catharsis of the nascent Magneto’s burgeoning mutant powers at the end isn’t happening. There are no superheroes to undo this. But it will come with a price.
Resist. Vote. Impeach Trump. NOW.
