What's this? Two Hip-Hop posts in a row? What's the world coming to?
Back in 2013, I posted an entry about the nascent Beastie Boys performing at a space called The Kitchen in SoHo in 1983 (find that here), with Kate Schellenbach still in their ranks (see that line-up above, as captured by photographer Bruce Rhodes). Well, my intrepid friend Erik (whom you remember as my co-conspirator in the Indefensible Albums challenge) unearthed a video of the whole set. Check that out below.
I scoured around trying to maybe find a gig flyer from this show, but I was unable to. I did find the poster below, but it's not from the same event. I never saw the Beastie Boys at the Roxy, although I did see Kate Schellenbach's band, Luscious Jackson, play there in about 1997.
In 2018, the Beastie Boys are, of course, no more, although I gather Mike D and Adam Horovitz are working on a book together. Adam "MCA" Yauch left us in May of 2012. I want to say Kate Schellenbach recently revived Luscious Jackson. The space that had been The Kitchen in SoHo is now an optician called Selima Optique SoHo. The Roxy on West 18th Street, I believe, was closed in 2007 and demolished in 2017.
