Inspired by CNN's "American Dynasties" series, which is seemingly just an appetizer for the forthcoming motion picture, "Chappaquiddick" (about, presumably, the late Ted Kennedy's infamous aquatic activities), I've had this song in my head on endless repeat, of late. I was pleased to find that the proper video can still be found on YouTube, so here it is.
While already established as titans of British indie "C86" rock (long boring story -- Google it), I didn't hear the music of The Wedding Present until 1989, when my friend Rob B. returned from a trip abroad raving about this amazing single he'd heard, and you can read the rest of that sleepy saga on this ancient post.
Almost -- sweet jesus -- THIRTY YEARS LATER, "Kennedy" remains one of my favorite-ever songs, right up there with "Eighties" by Killing Joke, "She Sells Sanctuary" by the Cult, "Loose" by The Stooges and all the rest of'em. While only really obliquely about the Kennedys - and even that's arguable - it remains an entirely perfect song. If you're looking for something more specific about the Kennedy family, might I suggest "Bullet" by ye olde Misfits, another favorite.
Press play.
