This is by no means going to be an authoritative list, and I welcome your additions, but in the wake of the news of the impending demise of HiFi, I got to thinking of all the other East Village/Lower East Side’s likely haunts, watering holes and live-music-venues we’ve lost in the past few years, and compiled the list below. Consider a sequel, of a sort, to this post from 2012.
What’s missing?
Brownie’s/HiFi
King Tut’s Wah-Wah Hut/A7 (now both amalgamized as Niagra, and still going, last I noticed)
The Life Café
The Lismar Lounge
The Lakeside Lounge (above, courtesy of Please Kill Me’s Instagram, and featuring the Prissteens).
Alcatraz
Babyland
2A
Save the Robots
The Gas Station
The Spiral
The No-Tell Motel
Mars Bar
Max Fish
Luna Lounge
Ludlow Street Cafe
Barramundi (the Ludlow Street incarnation, at least)
Motor City
Sin-E
The Knitting Factory (originally on East Houston)
The Yaffa Café
Downtown Beirut
Coney Island High
The Bank
The Ritz/Webster Hall
Great Gildersleeves
CBGB (far too many posts to cite)
Weigh in.
