Because you’re all invariably much cooler than I am, you probably know about this series already, but I recently discovered this podcast called Song Exploder, and it became a rather serious time-suck for me. In their own words, Song Exploder is a podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made.
While it may sound pretty rote in the wake of age-old programs like “Behind the Music” and such, Song Exploder delves deep into the raw ingredients of each track, dispensing with all the surrounding filligree and concentrating, with laser focus, on the individual elements, the lyrical inspiration and the full execution from random idea to full fruition.
Choice episodes for me included ones by Iggy Pop and Joshua Homme, Metallica, Swedish electronic combo Little Dragon and Canadian werido-siren Grimes. Sure, lots of the artists featured are folks that I -–being the old, bitter poop that I am -– have never heard or would conceivably never otherwise give a damn about (I mean, really, Joey Bada$$?), but I’m so smitten with the concept that I’ve been listening to all of them. There’s even one devoted to those old crotchedy warhorses in U2, although I haven’t listented to that one yet.
Anyway, if you dig learning about how your favorite music is made, do check it out.
