Technically, Stu Spasm’s Lubricated Goat were from Australia, but they cultivated the same sort of surly mystique and slovenly caterwaul as NYC bands of the late `80s and early `90s like Cop Shoot Cop, to say nothing of their fellow Aussie ex-pat, J.G. “Foetus” Thirlwell. In fact, circa the recording of the clip below, the band featured Vinnie Signorelli from Foetus/SWANS on drums and Tod [A] from Cop Shoot Cop on guitar. Later iterations of the band would feature Cop Shoot Cop’s Jack Natz on bass.
Despite boasting an arguably even more offensive name than Cop Shoot Cop (depending on where your imagination takes you), Lubricated Goat were not an immediate favorite of mine, but I did eventually warm to their scummy din. If nothing else, they certainly had a gift for amazing song titles, such as “Spoil the Atmosphere,” “Anal Injury,” “Frotting with Ennio,” “Goats and the Men Who Ride Them,” and “Give Chance a Piece.”
I’m highlighting this particular clip, from 1994’s Forces You Don’t Understand because not only does it capture the band’s giddily anarchic attack, but it also features some vintage shots of the East Village … naturally sandwiched messily between images of carnage, destruction and the requisite depravity one would probably expect from a combo with their moniker. It's all a bit riotously frenetic, but if I had to guess, I'd suggest the venue they're depicted playing in is CBGB, but that might be entirely incorrect. Not sure if that's Tod on guitar, either. That's definitely East Houston at Avenue A in the exterior shots.
Enjoy!
