At this stage of the proceedings, I think it’s fair to suggest that I know jack diddley about art. Sure, I took a bunch of art history courses in high school and was a studio art minor in college (don’t laugh – it’s true), but I can’t say I’ve kept up with doings in that realm as much as I arguably should’ve.
That said, I recently saw the work of an artist named Nigel Van Wieck that really struck a chord. Put simply (although I’m sure he’d assert that it’s way more complicated than this) Mr. Van Wieck paints in a style strikingly similar to fabled American artist (and noted New Yorker), Edward Hopper. Van Wieck captures those same moments of silent solace that Hopper was so renowned for, only imbued with a more contemporary feel (and frequently more of a sultry vibe). Also like Hopper, Van Wieck's paintings are NYC to the bone.
