Boy, that year went by fast. Yes, it’s true -– Flaming Pablum is 11 years old today (being that my first ever post was on this day in 2005). As I mentioned last year when I rang in the blog’s first decade, I am continually astonished that people read these posts, let alone come back and ask for more. For that I am truly grateful. I’d invariably prompt my near and dear to murder me if I didn’t have this blog wherein to express all this stuff.
Speaking of not having an outlet to do just that, I spied a disturbing story on Thursday reporting that Google had deleted the entirety of a blog by writer Dennis Cooper, essentially erasing years and years of his output (he’d been blogging since 2002). Being the Nervous Nelly I am, I have long considered taking on the seemingly maddening task of printing out copies of all of my blog’s 3,269 entries (!!!), although that might seem like a catastrophic waste of paper and toner. We’ll see. I’m not sure what Cooper did, wrote or said to prompt Google to take such an action, but I’d be very curious to learn. Evidently, Cooper’s work has a tendency to get a little porny, so I’m assuming it had something to do with that.
Anyway, since the blog’s last birthday, we’ve lost a few more record/disc stores, a few more book stores, a few more fellow bloggers (well, they didn’t die, they just stopped blogging) and felt the sudden, cruel losses of Philthy Animal Taylor and Lemmy from Motorhead, David Goddamn Bowie, Prince, Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane and several estimable others. Via the blog, I’ve made a few new friends, blazed a couple of new conceptual trails and unwittingly pissed off a figure or two I genuinely admire, but did my best to make amends. On a personal level, myself and my family have weathered a few encouraging ups and a few very serious downs, but we’ve come out swinging and in fighting form on the other side. At the very least, I landed a job that I’m loving, which has made a world of difference.
What happens next? We shall see. But thanks -– as always -– for coming along for the ride.
