In piecing ideas together for what promises to be a somewhat paltry list of year-end favorites, I was reminded of the track/video below by Bay Area ex-hardcore band, Ceremony.
I’d be fibbing shamefully by saying I knew very much about this band, being that their brand of hardcore transpired during an era after I’d long since checked out of that particular scene. They’ve evolved into more of a post-punk ensemble that wears its influences rather prominently (I’m assuming they’re named after the Joy Division/New Order hymn, but maybe I’m wrong).
In any case, despite not being hugely invested in their catalog and backstory, I did quite warm to this track this year. The fact that it comes with a gritty, stylized video doesn’t hurt.
Herein we see, presumably, Ceremony’s lead singer – who is evidently quite proud of his tattoos -- brooding manfully around what looks like a spartanly appointed apartment. Much like Ceremony’s Bay Areas forebears in Rancid, despite the fact that the band hails from San Francisco, this video appears to have been shot in New York City. It’s got an elusive, kinda Queens-y vibe, and I’d wager even money that the graveyard periodically depicted is the Calvary Cemetery adjacent to the Long Island Expressway.
See what ya think, and watch for my Best of the Year List soon.
