Sticking with the early 80's theme here (ala yesterday's post), here's a mysterious clip I stumbled upon on YouTube.
Ostensibly a music video by a concern called Above Ground, "Coalman" repurposes some grainy, NYC footage for a cryptically arty, spray-paint-slathered three minutes of gritty, urban dystopia.
There is much the same feel here as captured in Rick Liss' amazing "No York City" (which you should watch again).
Here's the official description:
From a poem written by Stuart Page inspired by riding the subways in NYC during summer of 1982 at the peak of the graffitied trains era.
Footage found on YouTube and re-edited. "NYC Subway Graffiti from the 1980's" by Steve Siegel. Thanks Steve!
Song originally released in 1983 on Above Ground "GONE AIWA" cassette. Hopefully to be re-issued 2011 as 12" vinyl LP on Siltbreeze Records, Philadelphia USA
The Steve Siegel cited, of course, is the man responsible for similarly apocalyptic images as the ones displayed here.
