I’ve been hearing about the impending release of her book for some time, but this week, author Ada Calhoun put up a tantalizing teaser image for “St. Marks is Dead” on Facebook, that being the one below — a slide she purchased on eBay of St. Marks and Third circa 1963. Not a bong shop, cell phone emporium or froyo parlor in sight, eh? Click on it to enlarge.
Read some rapturous advance praise of “St. Marks is Dead” here (including a blurb from Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys). I’m sincerely hoping someone will clear up why the possessive apostrophe is missing.
Some years ago, the U.S. government officially removed apostrophes from virtually all place names. There are, I think, six or seven official exceptions. All are tiny obscure spots except one: Martha's Vineyard.
