Hey all. It's July 4th. Unfortunately, I have to work on Friday, July 5th, so my wife & kids are out at my mom's place near the beach, and I'm stuck here alone in the city ... like a loser. As such, I popped out this evening for tromp around the East Village for old time's sake. Jury's still out on whethter that was a good idea or not.
Being the slave to nostalgia that I am, I can't seem to stop myself from re-visiting certain haunts from my distant past in the vain hopes of catching a fleeting whiff of what initially intrigued me about the places in question. All too often, it ends in figurative tears. This evening, after circumnavigating the East Village, I found myself darkening the doors of d.b.a, a bar on First Avenue that -- in another time -- was called the Lismar Lounge.
d.b.a. owes absolutely nothing to its former incarnation save the address, but as I sat there supping my seven dollar beer, I couldn't help think back to my first visit to the establishment. If memory serves correctly, I'd gone to see a band called Youth Gone Mad play ... led by a gent named Ina Kostabi, an associate of sorts of the editor of the tiny indie music mag I was toiling for at the time (this being `89 or `90 or so). As I watched this band go at it, I remember chatting briefly with a certain raggamuffin front man at the bar named Rob Zombie. This was, quite obviously, a dang long time ago.
In any event, I unearthed this clip from a couple of years after that incident. Enjoy a beguiling MTV News reporter as she explores the New York City of the early 1990's with the members of White Zombie (including drummer Joey Tempesta, who now bangs the skins for The Cult, and the great J.Yuenger, whose blog I routinely pilfer from). Enjoy a trip back through time...
And, for posterity's sake, here's the mighty White Zombie prior to becoming successful...crank it...
