Over the weekend, news came down that Lou Reed had to undergo an emergency liver transplant, presumably due to decades of systematic substance abuse (i.e. too much walking on the wild side, to re-work virtually every hackneyed go-to headline of the weekend). Here’s hoping he makes as full a recovery as possible.
In any case, possibly in response to same, someone posted the above photo on Tumblr and it struck a chord with me. Here we see our Lou standing in front of the iconic firehouse door on West 10th street, just a few steps to the west of Greenwich Avenue. For a while in the late 70’s, my dad actually lived in the apartment building immediately opposite. I believe there’s a photo of me standing in front of it somewhere, but I’ll be damned if I ever find it.
But because it’s so iconic, I’ve indeed paid tribute to it with my own kids.
