Just to close the circle on this quiz, as expected, two readers basically confirmed that Josh Cheuse's photo above was also snapped around Broadway and 26th Street, in front of the St. James building.
Loyal reader James C. Taylor (who solved the original Beastie Boys puzzle by noting the distinctive "torus" and "quoins" on the building in question) writes:
Looks like the west side of Broadway between 25th and 26th. The building to the left of the gentleman in the coonskin hat is 1133 Broadway, aka the St. James Building. Below "OFFICES FOR RENT" the sign behind Run say "Kew Management" (they're a client of my company and are still located on that block).
Meanwhile, my pal and former neighbor (and noted photographer) Glen E. Friedman adds:
the gentleman in the coonskin hat is none other than DJ Double R, and besides Run_DMC and the Beasties, the other gentleman are the members of Whodini (Jalil and "Ecstasy") - no doubt shot around the management offices of the time which were at 1133 Broadway.
Earlier this week, as I was walking up Broadway on my way to work (wherein I also caught this snippet of church-worrying fashion), I once again walked by the St. James building.
It certainly does look like the same spot, but there's one odd thing. If you look back up at the photo at the top, there's what looks like a tiled or textured edifice behind Mike D and MCA. That particular surface is nowhere to be seen today. I suppose it's also worth noting that this picture was taken about twenty-eight years ago, so things have obviously changed. Certain other elements definitely match up, though -- like the stone, circular medallions that adorn the entrance to the building (see below).
Anyway, that's another one solved. Look for more coming soon....
