No big extrapolation here, just a great picture of Sonic Youth from a July 1986 issue of SPIN (photo credited as “courtesy of Sonic Youth”) hanging out at the Alice in Wonderland statue by the boat pond in Central Park (around East 74th street), a familiar spot to pretty much any kid who grew up in Manhattan. I certainly logged myriad hours as a tot climbing all over that thing.
As I’ve said before on this weblog, I greatly preferred Sonic Youth in these earlier days, when there was still a deliberately disconcerting whiff of the artily bizarre to their records. Given that Bob Bert’s replacement Steve Shelley’s pictured beneath the giant mushroom, I’m guessing this shot would have been taken circa the release of Evol. No idea who the little kid pictured next to Lee Renaldo is. Anyone?
