Back in January of 2010, I posted an entry here about a long-since-vanished movie theater that was located on the now-unlikely strip of Madison Avenue and 85th street. I'd vividly recalled being taken there as a child innumerable times and marveling at its distinctive interior decor. Then, in December of 2010, I managed to actually track down a photo of the Trans-Lux theater in question -- albeit from 1937 (not exactly the era I'd remembered, obviously, but enough to recognize it).
Yesterday, I randomly happened upon an amazing collection of photographs by one Elaine Norman, a New Yorker with an eye for many of New York City's myriad heretofore vanished details. There at the top of this collection, meanwhile, was a shot of the Trans-Lux theater that she snapped in 1981. I hope she doesn't mine me repurposing it here, as it truly put the hook in me.
