My comrade Bob Egan of PopSpots shot me a note this morning and offered up the pictures below as his own means of paying tribute to the fallen Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys, who succumbed to cancer this past Friday (see these two posts of mine if ya missed it).
For those who might be unfamiliar with the amazing PopSpots, Bob Egan spends what most would probably consider a maddeningly inordinate amount of time divining the precise locations of iconic album covers and equally significant images from pop culture. Even if you're just a passive fan of the music in question, Bob's scrupulous detective work is something to marvel at.
I can't remember if I'd mentioned the photo in question to Bob or not, but I had been singularly intrigued by this image of the youthful Beastie Boys hangin' tough in front of a Stromboli's Pizza circa 1987 (shot by Lynn Goldsmith). For a start, in Manhattan alone, there are numerous Strombolis (there's one just down from my front door here on University Place), but leave it to Bob Egan to pinpoint the precise one (that being the one on the Northwest corner of St. Marks Place and First Avenue .... literally just down the block from the site of that photograph of Television by Godlis that Bob Egan also pinpointed.
Next to Goldsmith's shot is the image of that corner today. Click on it to enlarge.
