I’d intended to mention this on that “King Kong” post the other day, but forgot. In any case, riffing off Dino de Laurentiis’ iconic monster-atop-World-Trade-Center motif, someone decided to re-release Jen Fukuda’s forgettable 1973 film, “Godzilla Vs. Megalon,” in 1976, on the back of the “Kong” hype. As such, we saw ol’ Godzilla and the frankly-less-than-terrifying Megalon perched on the Twin Towers in a scene that SHAMELESSLY rips off the “Kong” poster.
The things that are lame about this are myriad. For a start, there’s no earthly reason why these monsters would choose to do battle atop the buildings – it’s entirely impractical. One could argue that King Kong had a logical inclination to climb things, but why would a big lizard and a big horseshoe crab (or whatever Megalon is) have bothered? This is all moot, of course, being that the FILM DOESN’T EVEN TAKE PLACE IN NEW YORK CITY! Which means they’re all a big bunch of liars.
Don’t get me wrong. I love me some Godzilla, but this movie was a big pile of radioactive iguana poop.
