Being that I’m technically only half-Irish, perhaps my oft-stated grievances about St. Patrick’s Day shouldn’t add up to much. Regardless, my Irish side welled up with pride earlier this week when I spotted genuine Irishman Luke McKinney’s “8 Insulting Ways People Act ‘Irish’ on St. Patrick’s Day” on Cracked.com (for my money, the most consistently funny site on the `net). In it, McKinney tidily and hilarious sums up precisely what is so gratingly stupid, hypocritical and offensive about the holiday in question. Regardless of your ethnicity, it is well worth a perusal.
And while I’m very proud of my own Irish roots, I have far too many negative associations with the holiday in question than to be found anywhere near that stupid parade. I’ll probably celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by cracking open a Harp Lager and listening to IF I Die, I Die.. by Ireland’s greatest export, the Virgin Prunes. Slainte!
