I spied the above clip making the rounds today -- my friends Drew, Dean and Iann were all circulating it independent of one another-- and it was initially a head-scratcher. This is pop group Lavelette singing a little ditty called "Malfunction" as their comely lead singer is being driven around New York City (notably midtown around Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Triboro Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge and elsewhere). BFD, right? Well, not quite. As it turns out, the tune she's singing is actually a cover of song by the -- WAIT FOR IT -- fuckin' CRO-MAGS!
Wait, what?
Yep, that's right. "Malfunction" is a cover of a song off The Age of Quarrel. My friend Dean -- always a man in the know -- asserted that this is the handiwork of former Crown of Thornz/Skarhead guitarist Mike Dijan. What I find so striking is how well the song has translated into an accessible pop format, given that it originally sounded, well, like this....
