Just recently, my comrade-to-the-east, EV Grieve posted an unfortunate report that some narcissistic chickenscratcher had "tagged" the Joe Strummer memorial mural that graces the north-facing wall of Niagra's on East 7th street just off Avenue A. I happen to be a huge fan of street art in all its permutations, but messing with a memorial wall is just in bad form and poor goddamn taste, whether it be a mural in homage to a storied rocker or a local bodega owner. It's disrespectful and inconsiderate.
In any case, Grieve reported this morning that the mural has since been touched back up. Here's hoping no one fucks with it further. Herewith, then is a brief homage to the man and the mural (featuring fleeting cameos from myself and my then-infant daughter), and the photograph it was initially based on.
