Keeping track of the ongoing changes on 8th Street almost seems like an exercise in futility, but for some reason I can't seem to stop myself. As I said way back on this post from the dark ages, there's something about the closing of a restaurant that I find especially tragic. Restaurants take vision, care and -- ideally -- a meticulous attention to presentation. Someone really has to pour their heart into it to make it work. So every time one shutters, I can't help but feel a little sad.
Completing the trifecta of failure spearheaded by its neighbors Is Wine to the west and Butterfly's t-shirts to the east comes the arguably inevitable demise of Korean restaurant 8th Street Kitchen which, despite its impressive exposed log-face wall on the interior, has changed hands at least three or four times. I never saw more than a couple of people ever actually eating in there. And now it's gone.
A little further west, however, I was surprised to find that the relatively brand-new Patty & Bun had also closed up shop for good (and is already in the process of being gutted). I'd always meant to pop in and check out their burgers. It looked like a nice endeavor. I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to try it.
By the same token, new little places seem to be sprouting up on this strip all the time. There's a new sister cafe to the West Village's Tanti Baci and a tiny little expresso place. We'll see how long they last.
