A little over five years ago, I devoted a large chunk of a sleepy overnight shift at the TIME Magazine news desk (where I was working at the time) penning a post here that excerpted a passage from a Chuck Klosterman book (specifically an article that originally appeared in SPIN) about the somewhat strenuously dubious theory that Radiohead’s Kid A unwittingly predicted the events of September 11, 2001. I certainly thought it was intriguing at the time, but I think my reasons for putting it up had more to do with the desire to generate content for what was then my brand new blog (the one you’re currently reading). It was a lark, but a fun one.
In relatively short order, said post became one of the most frequently visited entries I’ve ever logged here, routinely linked to by dweeby Radiohead enthusiasts, conspiracy theorists and idiocy trainspotters alike. Evidently, my post is … or at least was … one of the sole places on ye olde Web where Chuck’s theory was mentioned in any depth. Unfortunately, in the ensuing years, the site I was linking the album artwork from went under, so the post is now rife with broken images, although that hasn’t stopped droves of people from continuing to visit it, much to my bemusement.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I checked in with my blogging service earlier this week to find that my pageviews had gone through the roof, several thousand clicks more than the paltry average. Turns out, the good folks at Cracked.com picked up my post to use as a resource in a compelling little piece called 10 Mind-Blowing Easter Eggs Hidden in Famous Albums. As a big fan of the site, I was quite honored. Anyway, even beyond my rinkydink contribution, the article is well worth a perusal. Go check it out, and tell’em I sent’cha.
For the record (pardon the pun), I don’t honestly believe that Kid A predicted anything, although I do still think the image above (from the inner booklet) looks eerily like fire gushing out of one of the World Trade Center towers … as ludicrous as that sounds. Do you see what I’m talking about?
