Another week, another downtown bar closing to ruminate about. This week, we beerily stagger west to the subterranean steps of the Stoned Crow, an establishment now reported to be closing its doors for good after New Year’s Eve. To be honest, I’ve never been the biggest fan of The Stoned Crow. That doesn’t mean I’m happy to see it leave, but everything about the place always seemed a bit forced to me … from the cut-outs of Pete Townshend and other classic rockers inexplicably plastered all over the men’s room wall to the tchotchke-laden décor, it all seemed a bit contrived. The fact that it was also usually frequented by shrill NYU’rs (although it is their turf, I suppose) didn’t exactly endear it to me either. My prevailing memory of time spent in The Stoned Crow involves a large gentleman threatening to break his bottle of Budweiser over my head for repeatedly playing “Firestarter” by the Prodigy on their juke box. Ah, the 90’s….
Pour one out for The Stoned Crow.
