By posting the above photo, I suppose I'm only further vindicating accusations that this blog fetishizes the past, but c'est la guerre. As I inch perilously closer to my forty-third birthday, I find myself randomly searching for pictures of New York City during the year I was born -- hence the one above. I'm not suggesting I hung out at the Five Spot (it's awning pictured on the southern side of the street above), snappin' my fingers to Ornette Coleman with the other hepcats.

Great shot of a snowy wet and dark winters day. I must have passed you by hundreds of times.

Here's a pic of what was there before the 5 Spot

I wrote to a friend of mine who traveled about the neighborhood years ago, he wrote back:
That was the 5 Spot as I knew it - but probably not the 5 Spot where
Ornette played, as they moved to this new location after Ornette played there, I
think - but that's nit picking - it was nice to see, & I prefer NYC in the
rain - at least in photographs - I hate rain in real life.

I believe the original Five Spot was a little to the south on Cooper Square/Third Avenue.

I love this photo!! I actually blog my grandma Maggie's diary, who lived on St. Mark's place in the 30s and it is wild to think this was in the future for her! http://suzannekingsbury.net/2011/09/hitler-and-floods-and-washing-your-clothes-in-the-bathtub/
