I want to say that I remember seeing Falafel Mafia share a stage with my friend Dean's then-band, The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black (Dean played bass, usually dressed like a chef or sometimes like an extra from 'Star Trek') during July 4th weekend of 1991 at CBGB. I used to have the flyer from the show pinned to my desk at the office. The lead singer of Falafel Mafia had a huge, spiky black Mohawk at the time, and I remember that he'd affixed tiny little American flags to each of the spikes just for the occasion. They seemed destined for… well, maybe not greatness … but they at least seemed destined for notoriety. Since then, however, it seems they've been erased from history. A Google search for them doesn't come up with much, although check out this fleeting clip of them appearing on a (disarmingly young) Jon Stewart's pre-"Daily Show" gig on MTV. Time flies.
Imagine my unfettered glee, then, upon discovering this invocation of Falafel Mafia from 1989 in one Leo London's provocative photo set on Flickr dubbed, Scans of My Pictures from Back in the Day. Fans of street art, scrawled, punky slogans sprayed on exposed brick and gritty black & white photos of since-transformed downtown NYC will surely enjoy.
