Here's a nice counterpoint to my depressing post of yesterday. I know EV Grieve had already been reporting it, but the seemingly impossible has actually occurred on Avenue A. When Etherea .... one of the last remaining record/disc shops in the East Village .... shut its doors for good last year, everyone predicted that the space would re-open as a posh wine bar or a novelty cupcake emporium or a L'Occitaine or something similarly awful. Well, I'm gobsmacked to re-affirm that earlier report, as when I walked by the space this afternoon, I was amazed to find it re-born as a fully-functioning book store! But not only is it a proper bookstore, it looks like one with an endearingly esoteric aesthetic (i.e. no copies of "Eat, Pray, Love" were prominently on display). In 2010, that's virtually unheard of and a palpable blow against the empire. Celebrate accordingly.
