My colleague Drew spotted this item in the NME and forwarded it to me. Evidently, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth will be conducting a "Dissertation on White Noise" for kids between the ages 8 and 12. As this other article notes, "given that children of that age are unlikely to know who Sonic Youth are, what a dissertation is, or what white noise is," it does all seem a bit precious and catered to the strenuously hipper-than-thou set, but I still think it's a cool idea. I'm not going to lie; I haven't given a sincere damn about a new Sonic Youth record since Goo (and, honestly, most of that record left me cold & clammy), but I still have loads of respect for Thurston (not least for his afore-cited love of all things black & metallic). I presume the program is designed to prompt an appreciation for unconventionally "musical" ambient sound, but given that I'm not in the right age bracket nor willing to pony up thirty bucks for the honor, I can only guess.
