I was never a particularly huge Sonic Youth fan. Sure, Bad Moon Rising, Sister, Evol and Daydream Nation all have some great moments on them (my personal favorite being their collaboration with Lydia Lunch on Bad Moon Rising, "Death Valley `69"), but too often their music has really failed to grab me. I certainly have huge respect for them, though. I was fortunate enough to interview them just prior to the release of Goo in 1990, and they were completely hilarious. Live, they can either be amazing or a monumental snore (I literally fell asleep on my feet once at a SY show -- playing under the thinly-veiled pseudonym "Sonic Death" -- at the old Knitting Factory on Houston Street) and all to often they exude that "too cool for school" vibe which I just can't get behind. I'm glad they exist, but don't ask me to wax rhapsodic about them.
That said, I think Thurston Moore is a tirelessly funny, insightful and interesting character. Courtesy of a thread on the I Love Music discussion boards, I happened upon this compelling interview he recently did with Decibel magazine, wherein Thurston professes his unlikely love for black metal.
