As the reality of the current economic climate further sinks in, I'm sure there'll be a lot more closings to report, but this one struck me this weekend. While the sign taped to the door gives the inevitable "we'll be back, honest!" message, it looks as though Pane e Cioccolato aka Caffe Taci on the corner of Waverly and Mercer has been closed and gutted. While few may shed tears about spots buried within the veritable crotch of NYU territory, I have to say that I'm sorry to see this place go (if it is indeed going). My wife I stopped in there a few times when we were first dating, and it always exuded a warm vibe. Nice spot for an afternoon drink on a winter weekend. No longer? We'll see. It'll probably be (yet another) designer frozen yogurt emporium in no time. Still, I've been wrong before.
