We took the wee ones uptown yesterday for a little stroll around Dad's old neighborhood. When the rain started intensifying, we ducked into the old Metropolitan Museum, which -- frankly but unsurprisingly -- was a bit more crowded than I'd have preferred. Still, the kids enjoyed it. Charlotte was endearingly transfixed by the Degas ballerina paintings. I, meanwhile, nearly had a cardiac arrest when little Oliver was let loose in a gallery of priceless 19th century furniture. For kids under the age of four, I'd suggest that the Museum of Natural History is a much better fit.
In any case, the experience prompted Peg and I to dig out one of our favorite films last night, John McTeirnan's 1999 remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair." Honestly speaking, we watch this movie at least once a year. Not only is it a completely sublime New York City film (specifically rife with great shots of the Upper East Side), but it's a great Autumn movie as well. Great score too. I know many cling to the Steve McQueen original, but I still prefer the remake. Sue me. Supposedly a sequel is in the works, but I'll worry about that when it happens.
Anyway, here's one of the climatic scenes, wherein the plucky Crown attempts to return a stolen painting -- or so you're led to believe. The interior of the museum shots were filmed in both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library's lobby on 42nd on Fifth. Also, Nina Simone fuckin' rocks.
Go rent it.
