I spotted this on Vanishing New York and, given my love of vintage NYC photography, felt compelled to share it here. Check out this article in the New York Times about photographer Jill Freedman (be sure to click on the slideshow) and her shots of a decidedly grittier depiction of New York City. The picture below was snapped on the northeast corner of St. Mark's Place and Third Avenue in 1979. I especially like the expression on the cop's face.
