I need to know about The Misfits. They are playing in Brooklyn sometime soon and I wonder if you think they are worth the train ride without Danzig? I haven't heard any new or even recent music nor do I have a clue as to who is singing. Their website is woefully out of date and gives no clues as to the state of their music other than that I imagine it is more about nostalgia than anything new or innovative. Opinion?
The short answer, Jill, is as follows: Stay home. The band currently making the rounds as The Misfits finds solely Jerry Only (or should that be only Jerry Only?) from the original, seminal line-up. Doyle was playing with them for a while when the ludicrous Michael Graves was serving as frontman, but those days are over. The last incarnation of the band featured Jerry, Dez Candena of Black Flag and Marky Ramone, along with some sundry members of Japanese Misfits acolytes, Balzac. If that sounds tempting, then have a good time, but as far as I'm concerned, The Misfits without Glenn Danzig makes about as much sense as The Stooges without Iggy. You'd be much better off seeing The Misfats.
If I'm not mistaken, Doyle made some onstage cameos with Danzig not too long back, and they dusted off some classics. That's as probably as close as you're going to get to the definite article. I don't think the chances of the original band -- or at least the Danzig/Doyle/Only/Robo line-up -- are especially promising.
I'd sooner suggest that you stay home, throw on Static Age and make do with that.
