It's New Year's Day 2008, and I'm still here in Galveston, Texas. When the wife and kids went down for a nap earlier, I borrowed my sister-in-law Suzie's iPod and went for a stroll on the beach. After a few old familiar tracks by Bowie, the `Stones and Morrissey (and a couple of new-to-me and righteously grooving cuts like "Boner" by the Grand National and something by the Go! Team ) this song came bubbling out of Suzie's earphones and I smiled. "New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down" by the LCD Soundsystem could not have sounded more incongruous while I was staring out across the flat, blue Texan horizon, but it still struck a major chord. Sure, it's hugely depressing, but I'm heartened that someone was able to capture that sense of loss and disgust with the gentrification of New York City that I and many kindred souls feel. It's actually the perfect song to listen to
while reading this site. But as the song suggests, I'd still never want to live anywhere else.
