It was my birthday on Saturday night, and my lovely wife organized a small get-together. In this new age of iTunes and digital music, I didn't bother making a painstakingly anguished-over mixtape, but rather simply built a new playlist to play out of my computer. In doing so, I stumbled across this lone track from Ryan Adams in my catalog, and it really took me back.
I've never been a member of the Ryan Adams cult. I know several people who believe that the sun shines out of his behind, but I've never really been a fan of any of that alt.country americana crap. His previous band, Whiskeytown, were alright, I guess, but I'd much rather hear something with a bit more bile. In any event, I do remember seeing this video back in 2001 (rather presciently shot, as it says, mere days before the events of September 11th) and being completely struck by it. Ryan's gone onto record a few more records, and I haven't bothered following up on any of them. As far as I'm concerned, this is his finest moment. It's still a bit strange to watch this video now. See what ya think.
