Noteworthy Photography

  • Burning Flags Press
The website of Glen E. Friedman. Renowned for both his work with musicians like Fugazi, Minor Threat, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Slayer (and many, many more) as well as his groundbreaking documentation of the burgeoning skateboard phenomenon in the late `70's, Glen has been privvy to (and has summarily captured on film) some of the coolest stuff ever. He's also an incredibly insightful and nice guy to boot.
  • SoHo Blues - Photography by Allan Tannenbaum
Allan Tannenbaum is a local photographer who has been everywhere and shot everything, from members of Blondie hanging out at the Mudd Club through the collapsing towers of the World Trade Center on September 11th. You could spend hours on this site, and I have.
  • Robert Otter Photographs
Amazing vintage photographs of New York City, specifically my own neighborhood, Greenwich Village.
  • oboylephoto
Just some intensely cool photographs of abandoned places.
  • Rikki Ercoli's Legends of Punk
Much like Glen E. Friedman (see above), Rikki Ercoli has managed to catch some amazing bands in their manic element.
  • Lost & Found Film
A fascinating website devoted to undeveloped film found in vintage camers. A curious mixture of interesting and spooky.
  • Pinhole Photography by Veronica Saddler
NYC landmarks shot through a pinhole lens. Neat-o.
  • Eugene Merinov
Compelling shots of Punk, Post-Punk and New Wave band performing live in various long-lost venues in a pre-sanitized New York City. Great stuff!
  • Edward Colver

Don't think of your blog as work, but as an escape for whatever negative is occurring in your life. You obviously gather much joy whenever you blog. Scale down the frequency, but do not abandoned it. Not for us, but for you.

All the best in 2014.

Alex in NYC

Oh believe me, I’ve never considered writing this blog to be “work.” That said, believe it or not, it does take up a fair amount of time and energy. That’s not a complaint, it’s just a fact. My reasons for putting it more or less on hold, however, are more due to the fact that I really cannot justify penning paeans to long-lost record stores, forgotten bars, obscure street art or richly-maligned post-punk bands right now. It’s not that these things are necessarily trivial (they’re certainly not to me), but I really need to keep my eyes on the prize at the moment, so to speak. I hate to keep being so vague, but when I feel I have the situation more in hand, I’m sure I’ll resume activity here.

Beyond that, I’m not really in the right frame of mind right now. To be perfectly honest, I can’t say I’ve ever felt so powerless or heartbroken. And as much as I’d like to consider myself the deep, mysterious type, I’m actually a slavishly chatty over-sharer. This combination needs to be kept in check at the moment.

Hope things improve for you soon. This blog clearly brings a lot of people a lot of joy, which is something to be proud of.

Hang in there.

Wishing you a quick and happy resolution to whatever it is that has you down Alex. I look forward to the time you decide it's right to come back and blog some more - I just can't imagine this is the end of Flaming Pablum! See you around on FB!

If it weren't for your blog, I wouldn't have discovered Francis and the Lights. Thanks for being cool and I hope you'd still post some new music recommendations from time to time.

Best of luck!
