Noteworthy Photography

  • Burning Flags Press
The website of Glen E. Friedman. Renowned for both his work with musicians like Fugazi, Minor Threat, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Slayer (and many, many more) as well as his groundbreaking documentation of the burgeoning skateboard phenomenon in the late `70's, Glen has been privvy to (and has summarily captured on film) some of the coolest stuff ever. He's also an incredibly insightful and nice guy to boot.
  • SoHo Blues - Photography by Allan Tannenbaum
Allan Tannenbaum is a local photographer who has been everywhere and shot everything, from members of Blondie hanging out at the Mudd Club through the collapsing towers of the World Trade Center on September 11th. You could spend hours on this site, and I have.
  • Robert Otter Photographs
Amazing vintage photographs of New York City, specifically my own neighborhood, Greenwich Village.
  • oboylephoto
Just some intensely cool photographs of abandoned places.
  • Rikki Ercoli's Legends of Punk
Much like Glen E. Friedman (see above), Rikki Ercoli has managed to catch some amazing bands in their manic element.
  • Lost & Found Film
A fascinating website devoted to undeveloped film found in vintage camers. A curious mixture of interesting and spooky.
  • Pinhole Photography by Veronica Saddler
NYC landmarks shot through a pinhole lens. Neat-o.
  • Satan's Laundromat
My new favorite website, really. In its own words, "a photolog of New York, with an emphasis on urban decay, strange signage and general weirdness." What's not to love?
  • Eugene Merinov
Compelling shots of Punk, Post-Punk and New Wave band performing live in various long-lost venues in a pre-sanitized New York City. Great stuff!

Back To The Blender

One of my favorite local bands, Life In A Blender just released their sixth -- if I'm correct -- album, The Heart Is A Small Balloon. I've written about them here in the past, but suffice to say, they're strenuously entertaining. Visit their website, buy the compact disc and go see them in July at Joe's Pub. Support your local music scene. I'm usually anchored at home by my two feisty offspring, but I'm going to try to make it to this show, so you should too, dagnabbit.

And -- just to be a bit of a whore for the job for a second -- if you do go check them out, why not post your thoughts and images about it on the freshly minted You R Here blog? Seen a cool show lately? Tell the world about it. Share your impressions. It's fun! Yay!

And I've posted this video of theirs in the distant past, but that was before the easy era of YouTube. So, for an encore presentation, here is the entirely brilliant "Chicken Dance" video by Life in A Blender.

BASTARD LEWIS!

Go to the show! Don't just say you're going to try to go! Go go go! Will you go? Go! We're even going to bring Alice, who's never been to a gig, so bring Charlotte. They can scream at inappropriate moments and break barware together.

Hope you're well, Alex. You certainly still sound like yourself! Your former place of employment would be unrecognizable to you now....

If ya missed the recent story in the TIMES about one of Blender's tunes on the new album, part of it is here:

You have to get TIMES select to see the rest. Is it worth it? Well, I think so, but I'm married to the madness. MP
